Silver Lake School Class of '57

This web site no longer meets my University's standards for web sites they host; alas.  Making the site compliant is currently prohibitive of my resources.  Thus I have taken down most of this material.  The material is not lost.  You will just have to contact me directly if you want to track down information that was previously posted here.  I am at <fkleinha at IU dot edu>.

50th Reunion:  Silver Lake School Class of '57; Silver Lake Ohio

A good time was had by all at our 50 th reunion on July 21-22, 2007.  Nearly half of the class with their spouses were able to make it.  What follows is a record of new and old in pictures.
We began gathering at area motels and renewing old friendships Friday night.  Saturday we were the 'featured' group in the Garden Club Parade which began at 11 Saturday morning.  Many of us 'marched' in the parade and the rest joined us for the Garden Club Festival and Fund Raiser at the Silver Lake Park (swim beach).  There was non-stop talking for hours and time for a boat ride on the lake.  Later in the afternoon we had a tour of our old school where we meticulously searched out each of our classrooms from grade 1 through 8 and took a 'new' class photo. Thanks to Wally Nagel for our class t-shirts.   Many things have changed now, of course, as the school is part of the CF School System and only goes to grade 5.
In the evening  Pris Drach and JW Coffman generously opened their home to us and served dinner.  Their home is beautifully located on the east shore of Silver Lake at the very end of Silver Lake Blvd, providing us a wonderful setting for our nostalgia trip. Pris and JW, who are librarians, donated our dinner and requested in exchange that we donate money for our old school library.  More than $2500 was raised.  Many thanks to Jim Bishop who arranged for our 8th grade science/math teacher and basketball coach, Bill Pletzer and his wife Mary Ann, to attend the festivities.  Gingr Vaughan gets credit for the gorgeous cake featuring the picture of our class of '57.
On Sunday, Pris arranged a picnic for us in the Silver Lake Pavilion shelter by the river and Village Hall.  Following this, Gingr Vaughan, one of our two class artists, generously had an open house to see her beautiful gardens and house. (However, yours truly, spent his afternoon pedaling the entire village, visiting all his favorite haunts.)  To cap the weekend off, about ten of us 'hard core' participants attended a concert at Blossom Music Center.  Once again, Pris fed us with a picnic supper (hey, you have to get rid of that left over food somehow)!

A great many people contributed to the wonderful success of our weekend. Special thanks go to Marcia Barlow for much of the pre-weekend organizational work and tireless tracking down of class mates and to Pris Drach for opening her home, feeding us, and taking care of a million logistical details of the weekend.  An ad hoc committee including Marcia Barlow, Pris Drach, Bonnie McCombs, Dennis Miller, Fritz Kleinhans, and others spent 6 months prior to the reunion trading and polishing ideas.

Thanks to the IUPUI aka IUI Physics Department for letting us host this site on their servers.
